Catching Flies – New Gods
‘New Gods’ marks the welcome return of the London artist whose music draws from a wide-ranging palette of influences including jazz, soul, hip-hop, house and electronica. Perfectly encapsulating what Catching Flies is all about and sees him collaborating with two of London’s brightest stars: hip hop artist Jay Prince (who toured with Chance The Rapper) and Gilles Peterson favourite Oscar Jerome.
The results certainly speak of a rich and fertile working relationship; as a song it flows easily, even as the structure is ambitious, taking the listener through rap lyrics of complex self-realisation, rich layers of electronic texture, a section of gorgeous jazz guitar/bass interplay, and into a final coda that drifts dreamily to a standstill as if in loosened gravity – all in the space of little more than three minutes.
