stmartiins – Melvin

Scottish duo, stmartiins, capped off their incredible 2019 with releasing quirky, thoughtful and magical ‘Melvin’. If you haven’t heard of stmartiins before, they come from Dundee and have attained a reputation for creating incredible bedroom styled art-pop. Over the course of 2019 they have signed to Manchester label, LAB records (Hockey Dad, Cassia, Arlo), gained a solid backing from big U.K. radio stations such as Radio 1, Radio X, Amazing Radio and have had coverage from Fred Perry! Oh, don’t forget the 5 New Music Friday playlists they have featured on throughout the year.

‘Melvin’ is a slight stray away from the duo’s more melancholic, sometimes erratic style. There’s a more of a consistent and prominent rhythm featured in ‘Melvin’, adding an uplifting electro-indie/almost neo-soul feel to the track. The dreamy and hazey melodies are still the cherry on top for me, with the band finding an amazing balance in not getting too lost in any of the defining features of the song.

In an interview with Tenement TV, Katie (lead singer) explains the meaning behind ‘Melvin’

“I’ve felt sadness a lot in my life, like i was born mostly sad. but I’d never lived a sadness like I did when my friend Gregory died. id never felt the weight of nothingness before, how much more time we spend not existing, than the time we do. The first night I met Gregory we went back to his flat and there he lived with his pug called Melvin.”
