The Wonder Years – Losing My Religion

The Wonder Years are massive legends in the pop-punk and rock worlds. The band have released music since the mid 2000’s and have 6 studio albums under their belt. You would have been forgiven if you thought that their recent year and-a-half long break from releasing music would culminate in the worst way. Fortunately for us, it didn’t. The L.A punks have emerged with a new release, a cover of R.E.M’s ‘Losing My Religion’. The track was released exclusively on Amazon Music, but is now available on all streaming platforms.

The cover itself is exactly what you would expect (in all the best ways) of a pop-punk band covering R.E.M. In many ways, the two actually pair up very nicely. The stereotypical context of R.E.M songs is singing about the devastating effects of climate change, the West’s capitalist brainwashing of its citizens and the detriments of religion. This, matched with the powerful, emotional nature of pop-punk really helps in emphasising these points when sung. I feel if there is a relevant time to cover R.E.M, 2019 going into 2020 is exactly the right time.

“There are six of us in the band and so a quick consensus on anything can be a challenge, but when the opportunity came up to do a cover song of Losing My Religion, we quickly seized the idea,” the band say. “We spent a few days trying to find a way for our big, loud band to play a song that originally is based around a mandolin and found something that we were really excited to release for everyone to hear.”

The Wonder Years have started to garner a reputation of releasing annual covers around the time of Halloween. They pair the release with a set of hometown shows in which they do half a set of their own songs, followed by half a cover set! Last year they absolutely killed it, covering Queen(check it out on Youtube).
